6 ways to help your child manage their anger

Anger is a natural feeling that everyone encounters. Knowing how to manage those feelings of anger in a constructive way is of vital importance. A young child, does not have these skills yet.

Here are some ways you can help teach your child anger management skills, that they will have for the rest of their lives.

6 ways to help your child manage their anger

1. Set a good example  image

The way you as an adult handle your anger, will surely affect your child. Children tend to copy their parents’ behaviour, so be sure to model positive coping skills. Do something that calms you or puts distance between the cause of the frustration. Teach your child to do the same.

2. Talk about it   image

Talking through the issues that have caused anger usually lightens the situation and causes a calming effect. It is important to be calm yourself, when asking your child to explain the reason for their anger. Guide your child towards a sensible solution and try to gear them away from their bad feelings. Focus on the positive and point them out. Your child will learn to do the same in the future.

3. Show affection and and give comfort image

Validate your little one’s feelings and show that you care and understand. Never underestimate the power of a hug to make your child feel loved, accepted and calm.

4. Let them get physical  image

Help your child refocus and do things that they enjoy. Allow them to let off steam by letting them take a walk or other similar activities like going to the park.

5. Praise good  behaviour  image

It is imperative to let your child know that you notice when they handle their anger well. Be positive and verbalise it. It will help shape positive behaviour patterns.

6. Talk it out  image

In a non-heated situation, when they are open to discussion, talk to your child about different feelings people encounter. Prepare them with coping mechanisms so that they can cope with those feelings effectively.
